If I rebuild something that I've torn down, I admit that I was wrong to tear it down.

If I rebuild the system I tore down, I show myself to be a lawbreaker.

For if I rebuild something that I tore down, I demonstrate that I am a wrongdoer.

But if I build up again those things I once destroyed, I demonstrate that I am one who breaks God's law.

"For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.

If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.

Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down.

For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

Why, if I am now rebuilding that structure of sin which I had demolished, I am thereby constituting myself a transgressor;

For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a law-breaker.

Instead, I would really be doing something wrong if I tried to obey all those rules again. I would be building again something that I had destroyed. That would really be against God's Law.

for if the things I threw down, these again I build up, a transgressor I set myself forth;

But if I work toward being made right with God by keeping the Law, then I make myself a sinner.

“For if I build again the things that I have destroyed, I make myself a trespasser.

If I reconstruct something I have worked so hard to destroy, then I prove myself a sinner.

Rather, we are sinners if we start rebuilding the old systems I have been destroying of trying to be saved by keeping Jewish laws,

However, if I am now rebuilding what I previously tore down, then I prove myself to be a transgressor.

For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.

For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a rebel.

If I rebuild those things that I tore down, I show myself to be a lawbreaker.

For if I [or any others who have taught that the observance of the Law of Moses is not essential to being justified by God should now by word or practice teach or intimate that it is essential to] build up again what I tore down, I prove myself a transgressor.

But I would really be wrong to begin teaching again those things that I gave up.

Have some of you noticed that we are not yet perfect? (No great surprise, right?) And are you ready to make the accusation that since people like me, who go through Christ in order to get things right with God, aren’t perfectly virtuous, Christ must therefore be an accessory to sin? The accusation is frivolous. If I was “trying to be good,” I would be rebuilding the same old barn that I tore down. I would be acting as a pretender.

“In fact, if I build up again those things that I destroyed, I bring on myself the judgment of being a lawbreaker.

But if I build up again those things I once tore down, then I demonstrate that I am a lawbreaker.

But if I build up again the very things that I once tore down, then I demonstrate that I am a transgressor.

For if I build again that which I destroyed, then I make myself a trespasser.

If I start to rebuild the system of Law that I tore down, then I show myself to be someone who breaks the Law.

And if I build again things that I have destroyed [Soothly if I build again those things that I destroyed], I make myself a trespasser.

If I build up once more the things which I tore down, I demonstrate that I am a lawbreaker.

But if I tear down something and then build it again, I prove that I was wrong at first.

But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor.

And then I went on to explain that we, who are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners, know that a man is justified not by performing what the Law commands but by faith in Jesus Christ. We ourselves are justified by our faith and not by our obedience to the Law, for we have recognised that no one can achieve justification by doing the “works of the Law”. Now if, as we seek the real truth about justification, we find we are as much sinners as the Gentiles, does that mean that Christ makes us sinners? Of course not! But if I attempt to build again the whole structure of justification by the Law then I do, in earnest, make myself a sinner. For under the Law I “died”, and now I am dead to the Law’s demands so that I may live for God. As far as the Law is concerned I may consider that I died on the cross with Christ. And my present life is not that of the old “I”, but the living Christ within me. The bodily life I now live, I live believing in the Son of God, who loved me and sacrificed himself for me. Consequently I refuse to stultify the grace of God by reverting to the Law. For if righteousness were possible under the Law then Christ died for nothing!

But if I build up again the very things that I once tore down, then I demonstrate that I am a transgressor.

If I rebuild the very things that I tore down, I show that I myself am breaking the Law.

For if I [or anyone else should] rebuild [through word or by practice] what I once tore down [the belief that observing the Law is essential for salvation], I prove myself to be a transgressor.

For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor.

But if I am building up again those things that I tore down, then I show myself to be a transgressor.

For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a wrongdoer.

For if I rebuild the very things I tore down, I prove myself to be a law-breaker.

Suppose I build again what I had destroyed. Then I would really be breaking the law.

Indeed, if I build up again the legalistic bondage which I destroyed, I really do make myself a transgressor.

If I build up again what I once broke down, I do wrong.

But if I build up again the very things that I once tore down, then I demonstrate that I am a transgressor.

For if what I destroyed, these things I again rebuild (1:23; 5:2), I display myself to be a poshei’a (transgressor).
