So we also, when spiritually we were children, were subject to the world's rudimentary notions, and were enslaved.

In the same way, we were children like that in God's family. We were slaves to the bad spirits that rule this world.

so also we, when we were babes, under the elements of the world were in servitude,

We were as children also held by the Law. We obeyed the Law in our religious worship.

Even so, we (when we were children) were in bondage under the basic principles of the world.

It is like that with us; there was a time when we were like children held under the elemental powers of this world.

And that is the way it was with us before Christ came. We were slaves to Jewish laws and rituals, for we thought they could save us.

This is also true of us. As long as we were children, we were enslaved to the forces of this world.

So also we, while we were children, were enslaved under the elemental things of the world.

Even so we, when we were children, were in slavery under the elements of the world,

In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elements of the world.

So we [Jewish Christians] also, when we were minors, were kept like slaves under [the rules of the Hebrew ritual and subject to] the elementary teachings of a system of external observations and regulations.

It is the same for us. We were once like children, slaves to the useless rules of this world.

Let me show you the implications of this. As long as the heir is a minor, he has no advantage over the slave. Though legally he owns the entire inheritance, he is subject to tutors and administrators until whatever date the father has set for emancipation. That is the way it is with us: When we were minors, we were just like slaves ordered around by simple instructions (the tutors and administrators of this world), with no say in the conduct of our own lives.

So also, when we were younger children, we were enslaved under the basic principles of the world.

And so it is with us. While we were minors, we were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.

So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world.

Likewise we, as long as we were children, were in bondage under the ordinances of the world.

In the same way, we too were slaves of the ruling spirits of the universe before we reached spiritual maturity.

So we, when we were little children, we served under the elements of the world. [So and we, when we were little, were serving under the elements of the world.]

Well, it’s like that with us. When we were children, we were kept in “slavery” under the “elements of the world.”

This is how it was with us. We were like children ruled by the powers of this world.

So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe.

But you must realise that so long as an heir is a child, though he is destined to be master of everything, he is, in practice, no different from a servant. He has to obey a guardian or trustee until the time which his father has chosen for him to receive his inheritance. So is it with us: while we were “children” we lived under the authority of basic moral principles. But when the proper time came God sent his son, born of a human mother and born under the jurisdiction of the Law, that he might redeem those who were under the authority of the Law and lead us into becoming, by adoption, true sons of God. It is because you really are his sons that God has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts to cry “Father, dear Father”. You, my brother, are not a servant any longer; you are a son. And, if you are a son, then you are certainly an heir of God through Christ.

So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental principles of the world.

So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world.

In the same way, when we were minors, we were also enslaved by this world’s system.

So also we [whether Jews or Gentiles], when we were children (spiritually immature), were kept like slaves under the elementary [man-made religious or philosophical] teachings of the world.

In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.

In the same way we also, when we were not of age, were enslaved to the elemental powers of the world.

So we too, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elementary principles of the world.

It is the same for us. We were once like children, slaves to the ·useless rules [or spiritual forces; or elementary principles/powers] of this world.

So also, when we were underage, we were subservient to the basic principles of the world.

So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe.

It is the same with us. When we were children, we were slaves to the basic spiritual powers of the world.

Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

So it is with us — when we were “children” we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe;

So it is with us. Before we were grown up, we were like servants. We were just beginning to learn about the things of this world.

So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world.

So also we, when we were immature, had been enslaved under the yesodot (rudiments) of the Olam Hazeh.

It was the same way with us. When we were children, we were slaves to the principles of this world.

So when we were children, we were in bondage to the elements of the world.

It is the same for us. We were once like children, slaves to the useless rules of this world.

It is the same for us. We were once like children. We were slaves to the useless rules of this world.

In this manner also we, when we were children, were enslaved under the elemental things of the world.
