Not one of these people, even though their lives of faith were exemplary, got their hands on what was promised. God had a better plan for us: that their faith and our faith would come together to make one completed whole, their lives of faith not complete apart from ours.

All of these were commended in Scripture by faith, yet they did not receive what was promised,

and although they all had received commendation for their faith, they did not receive what had been promised,

Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised,

And these all through faith obtained good report, and yet did not obtain the promise,

What a record all of these have won by their faith! Yet they did not receive what God had promised,

And all these, approved by witnessing of faith [proved by witnessing of faith], took not repromission;

All these people gained a reputation for their faith; but they didn’t receive the promise.
