sed dicet quis tu fidem habes et ego opera habeo ostende mihi fidem tuam sine operibus et ego ostendam tibi ex operibus fidem meam
Yes, a man may say, You have faith, and I have works: show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
Yea, a man may say, You have faith, and I have works: show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
Yea, a man may say, “Thou hast faith, and I have works.” Show me thy faith apart from thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith apart from thy works, and I by my works will show thee my faith.
For a man may say to you, “You and I have faith; I have works. Show me your faith without works, and I shall show you my faith by my works.”
But some one will say, Thou hast faith and I have works. Shew me thy faith without works, and I from my works will shew thee my faith.
But some man will say: Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without works; and I will shew thee, by works, my faith.
Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith apart from thy works, and I by my works will shew thee my faith.
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
Another person might say, "You have faith, but I do good things." Show me your faith apart from the good things you do. I will show you my faith by the good things I do.
But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith from my works.
But someone may say, "You have faith, and I have actions." Show me your faith without any actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions.
But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith without works and I will show you faith by my works.
But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works."
But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
Now someone may argue, "Some people have faith; others have good deeds." But I say, "How can you show me your faith if you don't have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds."
Also a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
Nay, some one will say, "You have faith, I have actions: prove to me your faith apart from corresponding actions and I will prove mine to you by my actions.
Yes, a man will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
Someone may say, ‘You believe in God, but I do good things to help people.’ Then I would say, ‘You cannot show me that you believe in God if you do not do good things. I do good things, and that shows that I really believe in God.’
But say may some one, Thou hast faith, and I have works, shew me thy faith out of thy works, and I will shew thee out of my works my faith:
Someone may say, “You have faith, and I do things. Prove to me you have faith when you are doing nothing. I will prove to you I have faith by doing things.”
But someone might say, “You have faith, and I have works”. Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
I know what you’re thinking: “OK, you have faith. And I have actions. Now let’s see your faith without works, and I’ll show you a faith that works.”
But someone may well argue, “You say the way to God is by faith alone, plus nothing; well, I say that good works are important too, for without good works you can’t prove whether you have faith or not; but anyone can see that I have faith by the way I act.”
But perhaps someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and by works I will show you my faith.
But someone will say, “You have faith; and I have works. Show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
But someone may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.
But someone will say [to you then], You [say you] have faith, and I have [good] works. Now you show me your [alleged] faith apart from any [good] works [if you can], and I by [good] works [of obedience] will show you my faith.
Someone might say, “You have faith, but I have deeds.” Show me your faith without doing anything, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
I can already hear one of you agreeing by saying, “Sounds good. You take care of the faith department, I’ll handle the works department.” Not so fast. You can no more show me your works apart from your faith than I can show you my faith apart from my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fit together hand in glove.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me · your faith without · works, and I will show you my faith by · my works.
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
Yea, and someone might say, You have faith, and I have deeds; show me your faith by your deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
But someone will say, “One person has faith, another has actions.” My answer is, “Show me how anyone can have faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions.”
But some man shall say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show thou to me thy faith without works [show thou me thy faith without works], and I shall show to thee my faith of works.
But supposing someone says, “Well: you have faith, and I have works.” All right: show me your faith—but without doing any works; and then I will show you my faith, and I’ll do it by my works!
Suppose someone disagrees and says, “It is possible to have faith without doing kind deeds.” I would answer, “Prove that you have faith without doing kind deeds, and I will prove that I have faith by doing them.”
But some one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
Now what use is it, my brothers, for a man to say he “has faith” if his actions do not correspond with it? Could that sort of faith save anyone’s soul? If a fellow man or woman has no clothes to wear and nothing to eat, and one of you say, “Good luck to you I hope you’ll keep warm and find enough to eat”, and yet give them nothing to meet their physical needs, what on earth is the good of that? Yet that is exactly what a bare faith without a corresponding life is like—useless and dead. If we only “have faith” a man could easily challenge us by saying, “you say that you have faith and I have merely good actions. Well, all you can do is to show me a faith without corresponding actions, but I can show you by my actions that I have faith as well.” To the man who thinks that faith by itself is enough I feel inclined to say, “So you believe that there is one God? That’s fine. So do all the devils in hell and shudder in terror!” For, my dear short-sighted man, can’t you see far enough to realise that faith without the right actions is dead and useless? Think of Abraham, our ancestor. Wasn’t it his action which really justified him in God’s sight when his faith led him to offer his son Isaac on the altar? Can’t you see that his faith and his actions were, so to speak, partners—that his faith was implemented by his deed? That is what the scripture means when it says: ‘Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. And he was called the friend of God.’
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from works, and I by my works will show you faith.
But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
Someone might claim, “You have faith and I have action.” But how can I see your faith apart from your actions? Instead, I’ll show you my faith by putting it into practice in faithful action.
But someone may say, “You [claim to] have faith and I have [good] works; show me your [alleged] faith without the works [if you can], and I will show you my faith by my works [that is, by what I do].”
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
Indeed someone may say, “You have faith and I have works.” Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
[L But] Someone might say, “You have faith, but I have ·deeds [works].” ·Show me [Prove; Demonstrate] your faith without ·doing anything [L works], and I will ·show you [prove; demonstrate] my faith by ·what I do [my works].
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith without works and I will show you faith by my works.
But some one will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
But someone will say, “You have faith. I do good deeds.” Show me your faith that doesn’t cause you to do good deeds. And I will show you my faith by the goods deeds I do.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
But someone will say that you have faith and I have actions. Show me this faith of yours without the actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions!
In that case someone may say, `You believe. And I do good things. Try to show me that you believe without doing any acts of kindness. I will show you that I believe by doing acts of kindness.'
But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
But someone will say, "You have emunah and I have ma’asim." You make known to me the Hisgalus haSod (the revelation of the mystery) of your emunah without your ma’asim, and I’ll show you, Chaver, from my ma’asim, the Emunah.
Another person might say, “You have faith, but I do good things.” Show me your faith apart from the good things you do. I will show you my faith by the good things I do.
But a man may say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
But someone might argue, “Some people have faith, and others have good works.” My answer would be that you can’t show me your faith if you don’t do anything. But I will show you my faith by the good I do.
Someone might say, “You have faith, but I do things. Show me your faith! Your faith does nothing. I will show you my faith by the things I do.”
But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
But someone will say “You have faith, and I have works”. Show me your faith without the works, and I will show you the faith by my works.
