John’s bold message seized public attention, and many began wondering if John might himself be the Anointed One promised by God.
Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and eager to know whether or not John was he. This was the question of the hour and was being discussed everywhere.
As the people began to experience a feeling of expectancy, they all wondered in their hearts whether John might be the Christ.
Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were reasoning in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ,

But John answered them all in these words, “It is true that I baptise you with water, but the one who follows me is stronger than I am—indeed I am not fit to undo his shoe-laces—he will baptise you with the fire of the Holy Spirit. He will come all ready to separate the wheat from the chaff, and to clear the rubbish from his threshing-floor. The wheat he will gather into his barn and the chaff he will burn with a fire that cannot be put out.”
