Then they laughed at Jesus because they knew she was dead.

They knew for certain that she was dead, so their bitter tears now mixed with mocking laughter.
This brought scoffing and laughter, for they all knew she was dead.
They laughed at him because they knew that she had died.

Everyone was crying and carrying on over her. Jesus said, “Don’t cry. She didn’t die; she’s sleeping.” They laughed at him. They knew she was dead.
