The teaching I am giving the four of you now is for everyone who will follow Me: stay awake, and keep your eyes open.

“Keep a sharp lookout! For you do not know when I will come, at evening, at midnight, early dawn or late daybreak. Don’t let me find you sleeping. Watch for my return! This is my message to you and to everyone else.”

What I say to you, I say to all: Keep awake!”

And what I say to you I say to all, ‘Stay awake!’”

And what I say unto you, I say unto all: Watch.

And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!”

And what I say to you I say to everybody: Watch (give strict attention, be cautious, active, and alert)!

I tell you this, and I say this to everyone: ‘Be ready!’”

“But the exact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven’s angels, not even the Son. Only the Father. So keep a sharp lookout, for you don’t know the timetable. It’s like a man who takes a trip, leaving home and putting his servants in charge, each assigned a task, and commanding the gatekeeper to stand watch. So, stay at your post, watching. You have no idea when the homeowner is returning, whether evening, midnight, cockcrow, or morning. You don’t want him showing up unannounced, with you asleep on the job. I say it to you, and I’m saying it to all: Stay at your post. Keep watch.”

What I say to you, I say to everyone: Keep watch!”

Forsooth that that I say to you, I say to all, Wake ye.

It is as if a man who is travelling abroad had left his house and handed it over to be managed by his servants. He has given each one his work to do and has ordered the doorkeeper to be on the look-out for his return. Just so must you keep a look-out, for you do not know when the master of the house will come—it might be late evening, or midnight, or cock-crow, or early morning—otherwise he might come unexpectedly and find you sound asleep. What I am saying to you I am saying to all; keep on the alert!”

What I say to you I say to everyone, ‘Be on the alert [stay awake and be continually cautious]!’”
