They asked him, saying, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"
Then the three disciples asked Jesus, ‘Why do the teachers of God's Law say that God's prophet Elijah must return first, before the Messiah comes?’
And they were questioning him, saying, that the scribes say that Elijah it behoveth to come first.
They asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah must come first?”
Also they asked Him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
(to Jesus) Master, why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
Now they began asking him about something the Jewish religious leaders often spoke of, that Elijah must return before the Messiah could come.
And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

And they asked him, and said [saying], What then say [the] Pharisees and [the] scribes, that it behooveth Elias to come first.
“Why then,” they asked him, “do the legal experts say ‘Elijah must come first’?”
The disciples asked Jesus, “Don't the teachers of the Law of Moses say that Elijah must come before the Messiah does?”
And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Eli′jah must come?”
Then, quite suddenly they looked all round them and saw nobody at all with them but Jesus. And as they came down the hill-side, he warned them not to tell anybody what they had seen till “the Son of Man should have risen again from the dead”. They treasured this remark and tried to puzzle out among themselves what “Rising from the dead” could mean. Then they asked him this question, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come before Christ?”
Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
Then they asked him, ‘Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?’
They asked Jesus, “Why do the legal experts say that Elijah must come first?”

They also asked him, “Why do the Torah-teachers say that Eliyahu has to come first?”
Then they asked Jesus, `Why do the scribes [who know all about the holy writings] say that first Elijah must come?'
Then they asked him, ‘Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?’
And they were questioning him, saying, Why is it that the Sofrim (Scribes) say it is necessary for Eliyahu Hanavi to come rishonah (first)?
So they asked him, “Don’t the experts in Moses’ Teachings say that Elijah must come first?”
And they asked Him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must first come?”
They asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
