And saying, We have piped to you, and you have not danced; we have mourned to you, and you have not lamented.

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
'We played music for you, but you didn't dance. We sang a funeral song, but you didn't show any sadness.'
We played the flute for you, but you didn't dance; we sang a lament, but you didn't mourn!
A wedding song we played for you, the dance you all did scorn. A woeful dirge we chanted, too, but then you would not mourn.'
We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, yet you did not weep.'
and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.'
"'We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.'
'We played wedding songs, and you didn't dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn't mourn.'
And saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; We have mourned to you, and ye have not lamented.
"'We have played the flute to you,' they say, 'and you have not danced: we have sung dirges, and you have not beaten your breasts.'
and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you didn't dance. We mourned for you, and you didn't lament.'
“We made happy music on a flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a sad song but you did not cry.”
and saying, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance, we lamented to you, and ye did not smite the breast.
They say, ‘We played music for you, but you did not dance. We showed sorrow in front of you, but you did not show sorrow.’
“and say, ‘We have played the flute for you and you have not danced. We have lamented for you, and you have not mourned.’
“When we played the flute, you did not dance; and when we sang a dirge, you did not mourn.”
‘We played wedding and you weren’t happy, so we played funeral but you weren’t sad.’
‘We played the flute for you, but you would not dance; we sang a dirge, and you refused to mourn.’
and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
We played the flute for you, but you didn’t dance; we sang a lament, but you didn’t mourn!
We piped to you [playing wedding], and you did not dance; we wailed dirges [playing funeral], and you did not mourn and beat your breasts and weep aloud.
‘We played music for you, but you did not dance; we sang a sad song, but you did not cry.’
“How can I account for this generation? The people have been like spoiled children whining to their parents, ‘We wanted to skip rope, and you were always too tired; we wanted to talk, but you were always too busy.’ John came fasting and they called him crazy. I came feasting and they called me a boozer, a friend of the misfits. Opinion polls don’t count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”
‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did not mourn.’
‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’
and say, We have piped to you, and you have not danced; we have mourned to you, and you have not sorrowed.
‘We played wedding music for you, but you wouldn't dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn't cry!’
and say [say], We have sung to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wailed.
This is how it goes: You didn’t dance when we played the flute, you didn’t cry when we sang the dirge!
“We played the flute, but you would not dance! We sang a funeral song, but you would not mourn!”
‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’
“But how can I show what the people of this generation are like? They are like children sitting in the market-place calling out to their friends, ‘We played at weddings for you but you wouldn’t dance, and we played at funerals and you wouldn’t cry!’ For John came in the strictest austerity and people say, ‘He’s crazy!’ Then the Son of Man came, enjoying life, and people say, ‘Look, a drunkard and a glutton—the bosom-friend of the tax-collector and the sinner.’ Ah, well, wisdom stands or falls by her own actions.”
‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’
“We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.”
‘We played the flute for you and you didn’t dance. We sang a funeral song and you didn’t mourn.’
and say ‘We piped the flute for you [playing wedding], and you did not dance; we wailed sad dirges [playing funeral], and you did not mourn and cry aloud.’
“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.’
and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not mourn.’
‘We played ·music [L the pipe/flute] for you, but you did not dance; we sang a ·sad song [funeral song; dirge], but you did not ·cry [weep].’ [C The religious leaders wanted John to “dance” (lighten up his severe message) and wanted Jesus to “mourn” (follow their restrictive lifestyle).]
‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We wailed, but you did not mourn.’
‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’
“ ‘We played the flute for you. But you didn’t dance. We sang a funeral song. But you didn’t become sad.’
And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
‘We made happy music, but you wouldn’t dance! We made sad music, but you wouldn’t cry!’
They say, "We played music for you, but you did not dance. We cried, but you did not cry."
“We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.”
We played the chalil (flute) for you, but you did not dance; we sang a kina (lament, funeral dirge) for you, and you did not mourn.
‘We played music for you, but you didn’t dance. We sang a funeral song, but you didn’t show any sadness.’
saying: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge to you, and you did not mourn.’
‘We played flute music for you, but you did not dance; we sang a funeral song, but you were not sad.’
‘We played music for you, but you did not dance; we sang a sad song, but you did not cry.’
saying, ‘We played the flute for you and you did not dance; we sang a lament and you did not mourn.’
‘“We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.”
say ‘We played the flute for you and you did not dance. We lamented and you did not beat-your-breast’.
