People today are like those children. John the Baptist did not eat ordinary food. He never drank wine. So people say that he has a bad spirit in him.

John came and did not eat or drink. They said, ‘He has a demon.’
“For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
What I mean is this: When John came, he dressed in the clothes of a prophet, and he did not eat and drink like others but lived on honey and wild locusts. And people wondered if he was crazy, if he had been possessed by a demon.
For John the Baptist doesn’t even drink wine and often goes without food, and you say, ‘He’s crazy.’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, ‘He is possessed.’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a devil.

John came and did not eat or drink like other people. So people say, ‘He has a demon.’
“How can I account for this generation? The people have been like spoiled children whining to their parents, ‘We wanted to skip rope, and you were always too tired; we wanted to talk, but you were always too busy.’ John came fasting and they called him crazy. I came feasting and they called me a boozer, a friend of the misfits. Opinion polls don’t count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”

“What do I mean? When John appeared, he didn’t have any normal food or drink—and people said ‘What’s got into him, then? Some demon?’
John the Baptist did not go around eating and drinking, and you said, “That man has a demon in him!”

“But how can I show what the people of this generation are like? They are like children sitting in the market-place calling out to their friends, ‘We played at weddings for you but you wouldn’t dance, and we played at funerals and you wouldn’t cry!’ For John came in the strictest austerity and people say, ‘He’s crazy!’ Then the Son of Man came, enjoying life, and people say, ‘Look, a drunkard and a glutton—the bosom-friend of the tax-collector and the sinner.’ Ah, well, wisdom stands or falls by her own actions.”

John came. He does not eat or drink much. People say, "He has a bad spirit in him!"

Why do I say people are like that? Because John came, not eating like other people or drinking wine, and people say, ‘He has a demon inside him.’
John came, and he did not eat like other people or drink wine. And people say, ‘He has a demon.’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon.”
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say ‘He has a demon’.
