They say to him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
"Why then," said they, "did Moses command the husband to give her 'a written notice of divorce,' and so put her away?"
They asked him, "Why then did Moses command us to give her a bill of divorce, and divorce her?"
Then the Pharisees said to Jesus, ‘Moses said that a man could write a letter to say that he and his wife are no longer married. Then the man can send the woman away. Why did Moses say this?’
They say to him, `Why then did Moses command to give a roll of divorce, and to put her away?'
The proud religious law-keepers said to Jesus, “Then why did the Law of Moses allow a man to divorce his wife if he put it down in writing and gave it to her?”
They said to Him, “Why, then, did Moses command to give a Bill of Divorcement, and to send her away?”
Pharisees: Why did Moses explain that if a man leaves his wife, then he must give her a certificate of divorce and send her away, free and clear of him?
“Then, why,” they asked, “did Moses say a man may divorce his wife by merely writing her a letter of dismissal?”
They said to him, “Why then did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”

They shot back in rebuttal, “If that’s so, why did Moses give instructions for divorce papers and divorce procedures?”
They asked him, “Then why did Moses command a man to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
“Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a certificate of divorce be given before she be sent away?”
They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?”
Then they said to him, Why did Moses direct to give a testimonial of divorce and to put her away?
The Pharisees asked him, “Why, then, did Moses give the law for a man to hand his wife a divorce notice and send her away?”
They say to him, What then commanded Moses, to give a libel of forsaking, and to leave of. [They say to him, What then commanded Moses, to give a little book of forsaking, and to forsake.]
“So then,” they asked, “why did Moses lay it down that one should give the woman a certificate of divorce and make the separation legal?”
The Pharisees asked Jesus, “Why did Moses say a man could write out divorce papers and send his wife away?”
They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”
“Then why,” they retorted, “did Moses command us to give a written divorce-notice and dismiss the woman?”
They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?”
They said to him, ‘Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?’

The Pharisees asked, “Then why did Moses give a command allowing a man to divorce his wife by writing a certificate of divorce?”
The Pharisees asked, “Why then did Moses give a command for a man to divorce his wife by giving her divorce papers?”
They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a document—a certificate of divorce—and to divorce her?”
‘Why then,’ they asked, ‘did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?’
They say to Him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
