Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God?

Abraham was the ancestor of all of us who are Jews. Think about what he discovered.

What, then, shall we say Abraham our father, to have found, according to flesh?

What about Abraham, our early father? What did he learn?

What, then, shall we say that Abraham, our Father, has found according to the flesh?

In light of all of this, what should we say about our ancestor Abraham?

Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What were his experiences concerning this question of being saved by faith? Was it because of his good deeds that God accepted him? If so, then he would have something to boast about. But from God’s point of view Abraham had no basis at all for pride.

What then are we to say about Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh?

What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?

What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, has found?

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?

[But] if so, what shall we say about Abraham, our forefather humanly speaking—[what did he] find out? [How does this affect his position, and what was gained by him?]

So what can we say that Abraham, the father of our people, learned about faith?

So how do we fit what we know of Abraham, our first father in the faith, into this new way of looking at things? If Abraham, by what he did for God, got God to approve him, he could certainly have taken credit for it. But the story we’re given is a God-story, not an Abraham-story. What we read in Scripture is, “Abraham entered into what God was doing for him, and that was the turning point. He trusted God to set him right instead of trying to be right on his own.”

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered according to the flesh?

What then shall we say that Abraham, · our forefather according to the flesh, has discovered about this?

What then are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh?

What shall we say then that Abraham, our father as to the flesh, did find?

What shall we say, then, of Abraham, the father of our race? What was his experience?

Now how does all this affect the position of our ancestor Abraham? Well, if justification were by achievement he could quite fairly be proud of what he achieved—but not, I am sure, proud before God. For what does scripture say about him? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness’.

So what are we going to say? Are we going to find that Abraham is our ancestor on the basis of genealogy?

What should we say about these things? What did Abraham, the father of our people, discover about being right with God?

So what shall we say about Abraham? He is the father of our family on earth.
