"He may beat him forty times but no more, so that he does not beat him with many more stripes than these and your brother is not degraded in your eyes.
but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes. If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.
But never give more than forty lashes; more than forty lashes would publicly humiliate your neighbor.

but it can never be more than 40. This limit is to prevent excessive beatings, which would be publicly degrading.
“If a man is guilty of a crime and the penalty is a beating, the judge shall command him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with up to forty stripes in proportion to the seriousness of the crime; but no more than forty stripes may be given lest the punishment seem too severe, and your brother be degraded in your eyes.
He can be given up to forty lashes, but no more than that, for if he is given more than that, your brother might be shamed in your sight.

When men have a legal dispute, let them go to court; the judges will decide between them, declaring one innocent and the other guilty. If the guilty one deserves punishment, the judge will have him lay himself down before him and lashed as many times as his crime deserves, but not more than forty. If you hit him more than forty times, you will degrade him to something less than human.
He may have him struck forty times, but no more, so that your brother does not become degraded in your eyes by receiving a severe beating that goes beyond this number.

Arba’im he may give him, and not exceed; lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with makkah rabbah (many stripes), then thy brother would be degraded in your sight.

He may give him forty stripes, but no more, lest, if he should exceed and beat him more with numerous stripes, then your brother may appear contemptible to you.
Don’t hit anyone more than 40 times during punishment, because more than that means that their life is not important to you.
But don’t hit him more than 40 times. If he is beaten more than that, it would disgrace him before others.
He may beat him with forty lashes, and he shall not do more than these, so that he will not beat more in addition to these many blows, and your countryman would be degraded before your eyes.
but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes. If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.
