This too is a grievous evil: As everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?

And this, too, is a very serious problem. People leave this world no better off than when they came. All their hard work is for nothing--like working for the wind.

And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath labored for the wind?

This is also a terrible thing to happen. People leave this earth with nothing, as they came into it with nothing. All their hard work has been useless, like someone who tries to catch the wind.

This also is very wrong: As a man is born, this is the way he will leave. So what does the man get who works for the wind?

Here, too, is another grave evil: all of us, no matter who we are, will depart this world exactly the same way as we came into it. So what good does it do to continue to toil after the wind?

This, as I said, is a very serious problem, for all his hard work has been for nothing; he has been working for the wind. It is all swept away.

All of his days are spent in darkness with great anxiety, sickness, and resentment.

This also is a sickening evil—exactly as a man came, so will he go. So what is the advantage to him who labors for the wind?

Here’s a piece of bad luck I’ve seen happen: A man hoards far more wealth than is good for him And then loses it all in a bad business deal. He fathered a child but hasn’t a cent left to give him. He arrived naked from the womb of his mother; He’ll leave in the same condition—with nothing. This is bad luck, for sure—naked he came, naked he went. So what was the point of working for a salary of smoke? All for a miserable life spent in the dark?

This too is a sickening evil: Just as he came, so he will go. So what does he gain, he who works for the wind?

This also is a grievous ill: just as they came, so shall they go; and what gain do they have from toiling for the wind?

It isn't right! We go just as we came. We labor, trying to catch the wind, and what do we get?

Utterly it is a wretched sickness; as he came, so he shall turn again. What profiteth it to him, that he travailed into the wind? (Yea, it is utterly a wretched sickness; as he came, so he shall return. What hath it profited him? he hath only laboured for the wind!)

That's terribly unfair. They leave the world just as they came. They gained nothing from running after the wind.

This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go; and what gain has he that he toiled for the wind,

It is very sad that people leave the world just as they came. So what does a person gain from “trying to catch the wind”?

This, too, is unfair: He leaves exactly as he came. So what does he gain from chasing the wind?

This also is a grievous illness. Exactly as he came, so he will go. What profit does he gain for all his toil for the wind?

This too is a grievous evil: as everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?
