And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, Why have you done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

When Egypt’s king heard this news, he sent for the midwives. Pharaoh: Why have you disobeyed my orders and allowed the boys to live?

The king summoned them before him and demanded, “Why have you disobeyed my command and let the baby boys live?”

But the midwives had far too much respect for God and didn’t do what the king of Egypt ordered; they let the boy babies live. The king of Egypt called in the midwives. “Why didn’t you obey my orders? You’ve let those babies live!”

The king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why did you do this and let the boys live?”

So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and allowed the boys to live?”

So the king sent for the midwives and asked them, “Why are you doing this? Why are you letting the boys live?”

To the which (when) called to him, the king said, What is this thing that ye would do, that ye would keep the knave children? (To whom, when called to him, the king said, What is this thing that ye would do, that ye have let the male children live?)

The king called them in again and asked, “Why are you letting those baby boys live?”

So the king of Egypt called the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?”

So Melech Mitzrayim called for the meyalledot, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the yeladim alive?
