That is why we decided to build this altar. It will not be an altar where we make sacrifices or burnt offerings.

`And we say, Pray let us prepare for ourselves to build the altar -- not for burnt-offering nor for sacrifice --

So we said, ‘Let us build an altar. It will not be for burnt gifts or killing animals in worship.

And we thought, should that day ever come, we could point to this altar and say, “Look, this constructed altar dedicated to Him was not set up to sacrifice on, but to be a witness here at the border between us that we serve the same God so that your children will not accuse our children of following other gods.”

So we decided to build the altar as a symbol to show our children and your children that we, too, may worship the Lord with our burnt offerings and peace offerings and sacrifices, and your children will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no part in the Lord our God.’

This is why we said to ourselves, ‘Let us prepare for it and build an altar, but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.’

“Therefore we said, ‘Let us build an altar, not for burnt offering or for sacrifice;

Therefore we said, Let us now work to build us an altar, not for burnt offering nor for sacrifice,

“Therefore we said: Let’s take action and build an altar for ourselves, but not for burnt offering or sacrifice.

That's why we decided to build the altar. It isn't for offering sacrifices, not even sacrifices to please the Lord.
