It was an era when there was no king in Israel. A Levite, living as a stranger in the backwoods hill country of Ephraim, got himself a concubine, a woman from Bethlehem in Judah. But she quarreled with him and left, returning to her father’s house in Bethlehem in Judah. She was there four months. Then her husband decided to go after her and try to win her back. He had a servant and a pair of donkeys with him. When he arrived at her father’s house, the girl’s father saw him, welcomed him, and made him feel at home. His father-in-law, the girl’s father, pressed him to stay. He stayed with him three days; they feasted and drank and slept.
The Levite’s father-in-law, the father of the young woman, prevailed upon the man to stay with him for three days, eating, drinking, and spending the night there.
His father-in-law, the girl’s father, made him stay, and he remained with him three days; so they ate and drank, and he stayed there.
The father insisted that he stay, and so he stayed for three days. The couple had their meals and spent the nights there.
And the husband of the daughter dwelled in the house of his wife’s father (for) three days, and ate and drank at home with him.
and did not want him to leave. So the man stayed three days, eating and drinking with his father-in-law.

And his khoten (father-inlaw), the avi hana’arah, held him fast; and he abode with him shloshet yamim; so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
He made the Levite stay there with him, celebrating for three days.
His father-in-law, the girl’s father, prevailed upon him to stay with him for three days. So they ate and drank and spent the night there.
The woman’s father led the Levite into his house. The Levite’s father-in-law invited him to stay. So he stayed for three days. He ate, drank, and slept in his father-in-law’s house.
The father-in-law, the young woman’s father, asked him to stay. So he stayed for three days. He ate, drank and slept there.
His father-in-law, the young woman’s father, urged him to stay with him three days; and they ate and drank, and they spent the night there.
His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking, and sleeping there.
