When they arrived, she said to them: “Listen to me, rulers of the people of Bethulia. You were wrong to speak to the people as you did today, binding yourself by an oath between God and you, vowing to hand over the town to our enemies at the end of five days unless the Lord comes to our aid by that time.
They came to her, and she said to them: “Listen to me, rulers of the people of Bethulia! What you have said to the people today is not right; you have even sworn and pronounced this oath between God and you, promising to surrender the town to our enemies unless the Lord turns and helps us within so many days.
When the officials arrived, Judith said to them, Please listen to me. You are the leaders of the people of Bethulia, but you were wrong to speak to the people as you did today. You should not have made a solemn promise before God that you would surrender the town to our enemies if the Lord did not come to our aid within a few days.
And who be ye that tempt the Lord?

When they came, she said to them: “Listen to me, you rulers of the people of Bethulia. What you said to the people today is not right. You pronounced this oath, made between God and yourselves, and promised to hand over the city to our enemies unless within a certain time the Lord comes to our aid.
