The Gershonites whom Moses and Aaron organized by each clan and extended family numbered 2,630; and the Merarites—3,200.

The Gershonites were counted by clan and family. All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to serve in the work in the Tent of Meeting, counted by clan and family, were 2,630. This was the total from the Gershonite clans who served in the Tent of Meeting. Moses and Aaron counted them just as God had commanded.

Following the Lord's command, Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of the community took a census of the three Levite clans, Kohath, Gershon, and Merari. They did this by subclans and families and registered all the men between the ages of thirty and fifty who were qualified to work in the Tent of the Lord's presence, as follows: Clan Number Kohath 2,750 Gershon 2,630 Merari 3,200 Total: 8,580

Moses, Aaron, and the other Israelite leaders obeyed the Lord and counted the Levi tribe by families and clans, to find out how many men there were between the ages of 30 and 50 who could work at the sacred tent. There were 2,750 Kohathites, 2,630 Gershonites, and 3,200 Merarites, making a total of 8,580. Then they were all assigned their duties.

All the men from 30 to 50 years old were counted. They were the men who came and served at the tent of meeting.

All the men between the ages of 30 and 50 who were qualified to serve at the tent of meeting were registered.
