If you do that, everyone will know about it. Then you will be ashamed for your whole life.
Lest the hearer put thee to shame, And thine evil report turn not back.
Or he who hears you may put you to shame, and bad things will be said about you forever.
For if you do, someone who hears you could disgrace you, and a bad reputation will cling to you ever afterward.
Don’t be hotheaded and rush to court! You may start something you can’t finish and go down before your neighbor in shameful defeat. So discuss the matter with him privately. Don’t tell anyone else, lest he accuse you of slander and you can’t withdraw what you said.
for fear your listener will reproach you and your reputation will be irretrievably damaged.
