“Alas, my child, the light of my eyes. Why did I permit you to make this journey?”
“Woe to me, my child, the light of my eyes, that I let you make the journey.”
Oh, my son, the joy of my life, why did I ever let you leave home?
We had all things together in thee alone, and we ought not to have let thee go (away) from us [or we should not (have) let thee go from us].
“Am I not distressed, my child, that I let you go, you who are the light of my eyes?”
“Woe to me, my child, the light of my eyes, that I let you make the journey.”
‘Woe is me, my child, the light of my eyes, that I let you make the journey.’
“What misery is mine, my child, light of my eyes, because I let you go away!”
“Alas, child, light of my eyes, that I have let you make this journey!”
“Am I not distressed, my child, that I let you go, you who are the light of my eyes?”
‘Woe is me, my child, the light of my eyes, that I let you make the journey.’
